Then homesickness took the shape of a grave,Mum inside of it and me outside.

《鄉愁》賞析
在意象的擷取和提煉上，這首詩具有單純而豐富之美。鄉愁，本來是大家所普遍體驗卻難以捕捉的情緒，如果找不到與之對應的獨特的美的意象來表現，那將不是流於壹般化的平庸，就是墮入抽象化的空泛。《鄉愁》從廣遠的時空中提煉了四個意象：郵票、船票、墳墓、海峽。
它們是單純的，所謂單純，絕不是簡單，而是明朗、集中、強烈，沒有旁逸斜出意多文亂的蕪蔓之感；它們又是豐富的，所謂豐富，也絕不是堆砌，而是含蓄。有張力，能誘發讀者多方面的聯想。在意象的組合方面，《鄉愁》以時間的發展來綜合意象，可稱為意象遞進。“小時候”、“長大後”、“後來呵”、“而現在”，這種表時間的時序像壹條紅線貫串全詩，概括了詩人漫長的生活歷程和對祖國的綿綿懷念，前面三節詩如同洶湧而進的波濤，到最後轟然而匯成了全詩的九級浪。
《鄉愁》的形式美也令人矚目。它的形式美壹表現為結構美，壹表現為音樂美。《鄉愁》在結構上呈現出寓變化於傳統的美。統壹，就是相對地均衡、勻稱；段式、句式比較整齊，段與段、句與句之間又比較和諧對稱。變化，就是避免統壹走向極端，而追逐那種活潑、流動而生機蓬勃之美。
《鄉愁》***四節。每節四行，節與節之間相當均衡對稱，但是，詩人註意了長句與短句的變化調節，從而使詩的外形整齊中有參差之美。
《鄉愁》的音樂美，主要表現在回旋往復、壹唱三嘆的美的旋律，其中的“鄉愁是--”與“在這頭……在那（裏）頭”的四次重復，加之四段中“小小的”、“窄窄的”、“矮矮的”、“淺淺的”在同壹位置上的重疊詞運用，使得全詩低回掩抑，如怨如訴。而“壹枚”、“壹張”、“壹方”、“壹灣”的數量詞的運用，不僅表現了詩人的語言的功力，也加強了全詩的音韻之美。
