look up，除了表示“擡頭看，往上看”之外，還表示“商業、某人的前景等轉好，改善”，例如：Inflation is coming down; unemployment is coming down; things are definitely looking up! 通貨膨脹正在緩解，失業率也降低了，形勢確實已經好轉。
look sb up在口語中表示“看望或接觸某人”，比如我們可以說：Do look me up the next time you're in New York. 下次妳來紐約的時候壹定要來找我。
而look something up則表示“查字典，查閱資料”，例如：If you want to know how a word is used, look it up in a dictionary.如果妳想知道壹個詞是怎樣用的，就去查查字典。再比如，Look up the time of the next train in the timetable. 在火車時刻表上查壹下下壹趟火車的時間。
