明月幾時有?把酒問青天。不知天上宮闕，今夕是何年?我欲乘風歸去，又恐瓊樓玉宇，高處不勝寒。起舞弄清影，何似在人間。

How long will the full moon appear?
Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky.
I do not know what time of the year
It would be tonight in the palace on high.
Riding the wind, there I would fly,
Yet I’m afraid the crystalline palace would be
Too high and cold for me.
I rise and dance, with my shadow I play.
On high as on earth, would it be as gay?
The moon goes round the mansions red
Through gauze-draped window soft to shed
Her light upon the sleepless bed.
Why then when people part, is the oft full and bright?
Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again;
The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane.
There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.
So let us wish that man
Will live long as he can!
Though miles apart, we’ll share the beauty she displays.
? 蘇軾，字子瞻，是我國北宋時期有名的文學家、書法家和畫家，唐宋八大家之壹，豪放派詩人的主要代表。《水調歌頭》是詩人蘇軾在密州任職期間，因在中秋時節望月懷人，為表達對弟弟蘇轍的無限思念而所作的千古傑作。
? 詩歌的上闕第壹句寫到“明月幾時有，把酒問青天”是詩人在月滿團圓之時，舉杯向上天詢問，運用浪漫主義的想象力寫出了天與人、月與人之間的聯系。許先生翻譯為：“How long will the full moon appear? Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky.”完美地將中國古代中的“滿月”與“天空”聯系起來，尤其是“full moon”表達非常確切，符合中秋月圓的景象。第二句：“不知天上宮闕，今夕是何年?”將詩人的思緒引向了廣袤的太空，表達了詩人內心的憂慮。譯文為：“I do not know what time of the year. It would be tonight in the palace on high.”其中，許先生並沒有采取直譯的方法，而是采取了意譯，並采用了肯定句式來進行翻譯，但是用了“would be”表示推測，也非常切合原文的情感。第三句：“我欲乘風歸去，又恐瓊樓玉宇，高處不勝寒。”其實是詩人借助明月委婉地表達了自己“出世”與“入世”，“退”與“進”之間的徘徊，因為中國古代文人堅信“窮則獨善其身，達則兼濟天下”，這是困擾文人的壹個死命題。譯文：“Riding the wind, there I would fly. Yet I’m afraid the crystalline palace would be. Too high and cold for me.”中“I am afraid”將詩人的猶豫和徘徊之情翻譯得躍然紙上。詩歌下闕後兩句話“人有悲歡離合，月有陰晴圓缺，此事古難全。但願人長久，千裏***嬋娟”是廣為流傳的詩句，道出了詩人更高的思想境界，給全詩增加了積極的基調。林語堂的譯文“But rare is perfect happiness，The moon does wax, the moon does wane, And so men meet and say goodbye. I only pray our life be long, And our souls together heavenward fly!”中的“rare is perfect---”這個部分翻譯的非常好，林先生使用了倒裝句式向我們強調了完美是罕見的，個人認為這個版本更能體現詩人當時的心境。
