這首What Child Is This的歌詞作者是威廉.查特頓迪克斯(William Chatterton Dix,)， 1865年寫作這首聖誕頌歌。
是由當時迪克斯擔任保險公司經理，正遭到嚴重的疾病，當身體恢復時，他受到了壹次屬靈的更新，於是他寫了這首贊美詩，包括這首『奇妙聖嬰』，隨後采用傳統的英語民歌"綠袖子(Greensleeves)"的曲調。
雖然這首聖誕頌歌是寫在英格蘭，但它今天在美國比在英格蘭更流行。
