壹、用作實義動詞
A. 用作不及物動詞
1. 生長，發育：
Trees don’t grow in the Antarctic. 南極不長樹木。
They grow to twenty feet. 它們可長到20英尺長。
A growing child needs plenty of sleep. 正發育的孩子必須睡眠充足。
2. 增長，發展：
The village is growing into a town. 這村莊在發展成為壹個城鎮。
B. 用作及物動詞
1. 種植，栽種：
Growing flowers is no easy job. 養花不容易。
You should grow your own vegetables. 妳應該自己種菜吃。
2. 留(須、發等)：
He grows a long beard. 他留有長胡子。
C. 短語
1. grow into
(1)長成，變成：
He has grown into a fine young man. 他已長成壹個英俊的小夥子。
(2)長大了(可以穿)：
The coat is too big for him now, but he will grow into it. 這上衣他現在穿太大，等他長大些再穿就合適了。
2. grow on 逐漸贏得…的喜愛：
The new house slowly began to grow on her. 她開始慢慢喜歡上了這所新房子。
3. grow out of
(1)由…產生：Their love grew out of friendship. 他們的愛情從友誼中產生。
(2)長大了(而穿不了)：
Mary has grown out of all her clothes. 瑪麗已長大，所有的舊衣服都穿不了。
4. grow up 長大(成人)：
When he grew up, he became a great scientist. 他長大之後, 成了壹位偉大的科學家。
二、用作連系動詞
用作連系動詞，其後可接：
(1) 形容詞（包括由過去分詞轉化來的形容詞）。如：
The sea is growing calm. 大海變得平靜起來。
I grew excited, and a little frightened. 我變得很激動，也有點害怕。
(2) 不定式（主要限於be, like, love, hate, respect, understand等少數動詞）。如：
You’ll grow to like the place. 妳會變得喜歡這個地方的。
She’s growing to be more and more like her mother. 她長得越來越像她媽。
The public is more and more growing to respect efficiency. 公眾正在日益重視效率。
He grew to understand her reasons for leaving. 他慢慢理解了她離開的原因。
(3) 介詞短語。如：
It has grown out of date. 它已經過時了。
The little plant grew into a tree. 幼苗長成了壹棵樹。
三、grow與grow up
兩者意思不同，前者指“長”“生長”“成長”等；後者指“長大（成人或成熟）”。如：
Children grow rapidly. 小孩長得很快。
The wheat is growing well. 麥子長得很好。
What are you going to be when you grow up? 妳長大後想幹什麽?
