目前，我國學英語的學生都這樣認為：but for總表示“要不是”，與動詞虛擬語氣連用；except for總是作“除……之外”解，與動詞的陳述語氣連用。（《英語語法詞典》）四川人民出版社，P.144）上也說：“介詞短語but for不表示（except for）“除……之外”，而表示“倘若沒有；要不是”的意思。其實這是壹個誤解。but for與except for都具備上述的兩個意思和用法。如：
1. But for you everyone has helped. (LEG)除了妳之外，大家都幫忙了。
2. But for a half hour or so for lunch I am here all day. (Yeats)除了大約半小時的午飯時間，我整天都在這裏。
3. Except for John, they would all have died. （《初高中英語考點難點詳解詞典》黑龍江人民出版社，趙振才編著，P.284）要不是因為約翰，他們都已經死了。
《英語世界》1990年第壹期第376條答問：
Apart from the location, we like everything about the project. （《中高級英語考試指南》顧南華著）
A. Except that B. Except for
C. Aside to D. But for
其《指南》的編者認為答案為D（But for），而《英語世界》答者和許夢雄教授則認為B和D都正確。英美語言學家也承認這壹點。所以，but for 與 except for 無論是意思還是用法，它們是相同的。
