Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary 給出 family 的4種含義：
1 [countable + singular or plural verb] a group consisting of one or two parents and their children，父母，孩子組成的家庭
2 [countable + singular or plural verb, uncountable] a group consisting of one or two parents, their children and close relations，父母，孩子及親屬組成的家庭
3 [countable + singular or plural verb] all the people who are related to each other, including those who are now dead，家族
4 [countable + singular or plural verb, uncountable] a couple’s or a person’s children, especially young children，子女
上述四種意義中，僅第二種含親屬時，family既可做可數名詞，也可作不可數名詞；其余三種情況皆是可數名詞。所以，family其實在四種情況中都可以當作可數名詞。
根據字典解釋來看，英語裏並沒有區分家庭和家人的概念。
說family當作家人時沒有復數形式，是因為壹個人只有壹個家庭，他（她）的家人是壹個group，所以通常只用單數。
問題中的the familes指他們的家人，每壹個人的家人是壹個group，他們的家人就是多個group的集合，所以要用復數。
