Parting

Tune: Bells Ringing in the Rain

Written by Liu Yong (987-1053) in Song Dynasty

It was cold and the cicadas were plaintively chirping .

We parted at the pavilion, hating to leave each other

when the storm just stopped at evening.

Kissing cup in curtain outside the capital's gate,

any good feeling was missing.

During the time reluctant to depart,

the light boat urged me for loosing.

Tears in eyes and hands in hands, face to face

no words needed to deliver but the sobs choking.

Thinking of the river, a thousand miles ahead with misty water,

the evening mist looked very grey in the vast sky of Chu district.

From old, tender people are apt to give birth to be sad;

let alone parting in the season of autumn lonely and desolate.

Where I shall sober up from drunk,

it may be along the willows bank,

under the waning moon and against the dawn wind.

Our separation may be lasted over years,

The beautiful scenes in good days should be a waste.

Even though I have thousand kinds of amorous feeling,

no one may listen to my speaking
