TPA(12-O-十四酰基佛爾醇-13-乙酸酯)對小鼠表皮可誘發許多生化的、分子的和形態學變化,這些變化聯合作用可促進皮膚腫瘤發生.例如,TPA是用於小鼠皮膚誘發皮炎典型藥物,它能提高表皮鳥氨酸脫羧酶活性、表皮DNA合成、表皮細胞層數量、產生過氧化氫等作用而誘發小鼠表皮腫瘤.而葉黃素和番茄紅素能有效抑制TPA所誘發小鼠耳朵腫脹、皮炎和腫瘤,例如分別用0.07mg或0.36mg番茄紅素,與0.5nmol TPA壹起塗於小鼠耳朵,分別可抑制由TPA所誘發小鼠耳朵腫脹72%或100%,與已知有抗炎作用姜黃素效果相似(81%或100%),而改用0.07mg或0.36mg葉黃素,在同樣條件下可抑制20%或47%.這說明番茄紅素抗炎能力與姜黃素相當,而葉黃素則略差[46].……
