譯文：慶歷四年（1044年)的春天，滕子京降職到嶽州做太守。到了第二年，政事順利，百姓和樂，很多長年荒廢的事業又重新興
辦起來了。還重新修建了嶽陽樓，擴大它舊有的規模，還在上面刻上唐代賢人和當代人的詩賦，（滕子京）並囑咐（我）寫壹篇文章用來記述這件事。
我看那巴陵郡的美麗的景色，集中在洞庭湖上。洞庭湖連接著遠處的群山，吞吐長江的江水，水波浩蕩，寬闊無邊。或早或晚（壹天裏）時陰時晴，景象千變萬化。這就是嶽陽樓的雄偉景象。前人對它的描述已經很詳盡了。然而，因為這裏往北面通向巫峽，南面直到瀟水、湘水，被降職遠調的官吏和南來北往的詩人，大多在這裏聚會。（他們）看了自然景物而觸發的感情，大概會有所不同吧？

至於春風和煦，陽光明媚的日子，湖面風平浪靜，天色湖光相接，壹片碧綠，廣闊無際；沙鷗時而飛翔，時而停歇，美麗的魚兒在湖中遊來遊去；湖岸上的小草和沙洲上的蘭花，香氣濃郁，草木茂盛。而有時大片煙霧完全消散，皎潔的月光壹瀉千裏，（月光照耀下的）水波閃耀著金光；無風時靜靜的月影好似沈入水中的玉璧，漁夫的歌聲壹唱壹和，這樣的樂趣哪有窮盡！（此時）登上嶽陽樓，就會有心胸開闊，精神愉悅，忘卻榮辱得失，舉起酒杯面對和風，喜氣洋洋的感覺！
唉！我曾經探求過古時品德高尚的人的思想，或許不同於（以上）兩種心情，這是為什麽呢？他們不因為外物的好壞和個人的得失而或喜或悲；在朝廷作官的人為百姓擔憂；不在朝廷作官的人為君王擔憂。這樣在朝為官也擔憂，在野為民也擔憂。既然這樣，那麽，什麽時候才快樂呢？那壹定要說“在天下人憂慮之前先憂慮，在天下人快樂之後再快樂”吧？唉！（如果）沒有這種人，我同誰壹道呢？
