據作者愛倫坡說，這首詩是為中學壹位同學的年輕母親斯丹娜夫人而作，寫的是?我的靈魂的第壹次純潔、理想的愛?。從詩裏提到的地理、歷史背景來看，對斯丹娜夫人的愛慕和對古希臘史詩《伊利亞特》中的絕世美人海倫的景仰合二為壹。而在最後壹節裏，對不可企及的美人的傾倒又升華為對藝術?甚至是對真、善、美的無窮無盡的追求。因為在西文人心中，古代的希臘和羅馬已成為壹種理想的境界，那裏的壹切似乎都是至美與至善的。
