基督教贊美詩歌通常會在基督教舉行崇拜儀式時演唱，目的在於贊美上帝。歌詞內容主要是對上帝的稱頌、感謝等等，《Give Thanks》這首歌也不例外。
教堂音樂的早期基督教會曾沿用猶太教音樂，以唱誦《詩篇》為主。基督教本身最早的詩歌載於福音書，故稱福音頌歌。現在多數贊美詩都有可供四部合唱的高音、中音、次中音、低音曲調，但早期的贊美詩無和聲、無伴奏。現存完整的最早歌詞是希臘文贊美詩，約寫於公元200年，題為《放吧，喜悅之光》。
