第壹個時期： Old English， Middle English and Chaucer，古英國，中世紀和喬叟，這個時期的文學作品主要以詩歌為主，需要關註的是喬叟和他的《坎特伯雷故事集》。
第二個時期： 文藝復興時期，這個時期的文學作品以戲劇為主，需要關註的是莎士比亞和他的悲劇，喜劇以及歷史劇。
第三個時期： 浪漫主義時期，這個時期的文學作品以散文詩為主，雪萊，濟慈和威廉布雷克等人都是這個時期的代表詩人。他們的作品包括夜鶯頌等。
第四個時期：維多利亞時期，這個時期是散文詩漸漸退出，小說逐漸興起的時期，該時期的詩人著名的有羅伯特布朗寧，阿爾弗萊德等。但更為著名的是狄更斯和勃朗特姐妹的小說，代表作有《霧都孤兒》和《呼嘯山莊》等
第五個時期：現代主義時期，這個時期的文學作品主要是小說，各個流派粉墨登場，有現實主義的，有荒誕派的，還有意識流。愛爾蘭的文學家葉芝，喬伊斯都是這個時代的代表人物。喬伊斯的《尤利西斯》是意識流的代表之作。同屬意識流的還有女作家弗吉尼亞伍爾芙，代表作《到燈塔去》。
第六個時期：當代：主要指20世紀80年代之後到現在的這個時期，該時期的文學作品很難入到評論家的法眼，主要特征是內容多為快餐文化，不能稱為經典。但這個時期的電影藝術發展非常迅速，有很多電影劇本都堪稱佳作，不難看出，文學史的車輪經過詩歌——戲劇——小說的變遷後，下壹站很有可能是電影。

關於英國文學史劉柄善的那本《英國文學史》上說，維多利亞時期是英國現實主義小說的巔峰時期，代表人物就是狄更斯，而當時英國之所以掀起現實主義風潮，則是因為此前的18世紀到19世紀初期，浪漫主義風靡英國，雪萊，濟慈等人的詩歌風花雪月，讓人壹時忘卻了現實，但隨著浪漫褪去，人們又重歸現實，於是狄更斯等人的現實主義作品，如《霧都孤兒》，《大衛科波菲爾》等書得以廣為流傳。這是中國學術界普遍的看法。
但我個人覺得，維多利亞時代英國號稱日不落帝國，全世界的財富都積聚壹身，其本土國民不可能慘到像狄更斯小說中描述的境地。所以我覺得狄更斯的所謂現實主義小說是壹種偽浪漫主義，就是那種得了便宜賣乖的浪漫。
